KNEE ANKLE FOOT ORTHOSIS COURSE WORK MANUAL 2010

Previously you have studied Foot Orthotics and Ankle Foot Orthotics. These
have introduced the basics of Gait Deviations, Biomechanics, and corrective 3-
point pressure systems.
The KAFO module builds on this basic knowledge. The gait deviations and
biomechanics are more complex, and multiple 3 point pressure systems are
required. The movements at each joint of the lower limb must be taken into
consideration (hip, knee and ankle), and their effects upon the entire body.
Reductions in the movement of one joint can have dramatic effects on the
movement of the other joints. This usually means movement at free joints has
to increase to compensate for the fixed joints.
Energy expenditure while using a KAFO is much higher than what is seen in
use of FOs or AFOs. This is mostly due to the compensatory movements that
must be made in order to swing the limb. This increased energy consumption is
usually only tolerated by patients whose ability is improved, or who could not
otherwise stand and walk.
As the name suggests a KAFO is a device that controls the movements of the
knee and ankle joints, and holds the foot in a desired posture. This can be
achieved through the use of various materials including metals, thermoplastics
and laminates
